Soil biological response to multi-species cover crops in the Northern Great Plains

چکیده

Farmers in semi-arid regions are experimenting with cover crop mixtures as partial summer fallow replacement, the goal of increasing soil biological activity. We compared extracellular enzyme activity, microbial biomass, potentially mineralizable nitrogen (PMN) and mycorrhizal colonization levels after growing crops comprised one or four functional groups. asked whether can alter those processes components relative to during cash season, a mixture (CCM) will have greater impact than single-species legume green manure (LGM) two rotations wheat. Cover were planted at sites Montana April 2012 May 2014, additional 2013, 2015, terminated each site approximately 60 days seeding. Wheat was for following season. treatments included control, sole pea LGM, FULL mix consisting eight species, species Four single groups second rotation crops. The geometric mean activity increased (1.1–1.3 fold) first rotation, by 1.1–1.4 fold three sites. At fourth site, LGM 1.4 1.5 fold. response individual enzymes less consistent. Microbial biomass PMN and/or site-years, 1.2–1.7 1.6–2.1 PMN. Mycorrhizal wheat least treatment six decreased site. There no differences traits measured among single-functional-group treatments. Soil parameters correlated 7 16 comparisons rotation. After rotations, 5 8 correlations remaining Precipitation declined 30–50 % from Positive effects on systems may be measurable only when environmental conditions do not limit growth.

Short communication Soil response to long-term grazing in the northern Great Plains of North America

Grazing management affects ecosystem function through impacts on soil condition. We investigated the effects of long-term (over 70 years) grazing on soil properties and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission within a moderately grazed native vegetation pasture (MGP), heavily grazed native vegetation pasture (HGP), and a fertilized crested wheatgrass (Agropyron desertorum (Fisch. ex. Link) Schult.) pastur...

Benefits of Inoculating Legume Crops with Rhizobia in the Northern Great Plains

Inoculation of forage and grain legumes with rhizobia is an important process to maximize biological N2 fixation capacity in these crops. Inoculation has the potential of increasing dry matter yield, N yield, and residual N levels. However, yield responses to inoculation are not universal in the region. In fields that have previously grown the same grain legume crop (i.e. contain an endemic rhi...

Vegetation response to seven grazing treatments in the Northern Great Plains

Grazing systems may alter botanical composition and productivity of grasslands through differential use in time, space, or intensity. Seven simulated grazing treatments were applied six years in eastern Montana, USA to determine effects on plant community composition and standing crop. Treatments were moderate stocking (28.8 AUD ha 1 year ) of cattle using 3-pasture summer rotation, season-long...

Patterns and Trends of Soil Climate Regimes and Drought Events in the Northern Great Plains

Drought is the dominant process of crop loss nationally and within Nebraska. Nearly twothirds of the 18.6 million harvested acres are covered by crop insurance (USDA/RMA, 2003; USDA/NASS, 2003). For the most part, Nebraska’s crop losses range from $50 to 75 million in non-drought years, but the losses approach nearly $200 million in drought years, such as 2000. The past growing season (2002) cr...

Tillage and cropping effects on soil quality indicators in the northern Great Plains

The extreme climate of the northern Great Plains of North America requires cropping systems to possess a resilient soil resource in order to be sustainable. This paper summarizes the interactive effects of tillage, crop sequence, and cropping intensity on soil quality indicators for two long-term cropping system experiments in the northern Great Plains. The experiments, located in central North...
